Does Espresso Have More Caffeine Than Coffee? (Most People Get This Wrong)

One of the biggest misconceptions in coffee is the belief that espresso contains more caffeine than regular coffee.

It’s easy to understand why people think this. Espresso tastes stronger, looks darker, and is served in a small concentrated shot. Because of that intensity, many people assume it must contain significantly more caffeine.

The truth is a little more interesting.

A single shot of espresso usually contains about 60–70 milligrams of caffeine, depending on the beans and brewing method.

A normal cup of drip coffee, however, typically contains 95 to 120 milligrams of caffeine.

So when comparing a single espresso shot to a full cup of coffee, drip coffee actually contains more caffeine overall.

The confusion happens because espresso is far more concentrated.

Ounce for ounce, espresso does contain more caffeine than brewed coffee. But because espresso is served in much smaller amounts, the total caffeine you drink is usually lower unless you’re drinking multiple shots.

For example, a typical espresso shot is about 1 ounce, while a standard cup of coffee is around 8 ounces. Even though espresso is stronger per ounce, the larger serving size of drip coffee results in more total caffeine.

Another factor that surprises people is roast level. Many people assume darker roasts contain more caffeine, but the opposite is often true. Lighter roasts tend to retain slightly more caffeine because the beans spend less time roasting.

That’s one reason blonde espresso has become popular in many coffee shops. The lighter roast can create a brighter flavor profile while still delivering a solid caffeine boost.

In the end, whether espresso or coffee has more caffeine depends entirely on how you compare them. By concentration, espresso is stronger. By total caffeine in a typical serving, drip coffee usually wins.

Understanding these differences can help you choose the brew that fits your morning routine best.
